In all honestly, there were 18 animated movies that were a step above the rest, so to celebrate them, here are my 18 most favourite animated movies of 2025!
18. Lesbian Space Princess

With more animated movies embracing stories with LGBTQ+ representation, Lesbian Space Princess gave us everything in the best way possible. A fun and unpredictable animated movie full of surprises, hilarious characters, fun animation and a funny and original soundtrack, this movie is just insanely fun.
17. The Day the Earth Blew Up

Considering the sad state Looney Tunes’ parent company, Warner Bros, is in now, The Day the Earth Blew Up felt like a reprieve for the Looney Tunes that showcase why the Looney Tunes brand is so well-loved by fans around the world. It really is something when the biggest middle finger to CEO David Zaslav is also a love letter to the Looney Tunes fanbase in the best way possible.
16. The Songbird’s Secret

I had been a long-time proponent of simple but effective animated movies, but this movie really is a step above such movies. Its calm and charming atmosphere, paired with a unique and fun cut-out animation style makes this hidden gem so much fun.
15. I Am What I Am 2

In contrast, if you want something more exciting, then the sequel to one of the most underrated animated movies of the 2020s is for you! A movie that raised its stakes and went for a slightly different direction in the sequel, this movie is full of drama, action and some of the most impactful fight sequences of any animated movie this year. It is a movie that is as great as the first one.
14. The Legend of Hei 2

Another top-tier animated movie sequel to an already top-tier animated movie, The Legend of Hei 2 is far more elevated than the first, giving it a bigger world-building, fun characters that are worth rooting for and some good old top-tier hand-drawn animation. This is a massive all-rounder of an animated movie that is not to be missed.
13. Elio

Now, this is where things get very spicy because from this movie on, all the movies got the “Straight Up Fire!” stamp of approval from me, starting with the latest Pixar sci-fi adventure that was well-needed after all the bad luck Pixar has been enduring due to mostly no fault of their own. Despite it not doing so well at the box office, Pixar has broken its sci-fi curse in such a cute and surprising manner.
12. Mononoke the Movie: The Ashes of Rage

If you think the first Mononoke movie was very good, wait till you see the sequel! This experimental and unique animated movie felt like an even more elevated and gung-ho version of the first movie with more intrigue, twists and mononokes, I cannot wait to see the finale of the Mononoke trilogy later this year.
11. 100 Metres

There are two animated movies that came super close to getting a perfect score, and 100 Metres is one of them. Easily the Look Back of 2025, this movie is a passion piece that showcases the power of rotoscoping animation, while also being quite deep in its philosophical messaging. Definitely worth looking out for it, especially its recent Netflix release.
10. Lost in Starlight

Speaking of Netflix, the fact that this underrated gem from South Korea was relegated to a Netflix release is criminal. An emotional romantic drama that has one of the greatest third acts of any animated movie this year, this is the movie that shows the evolution of South Korean animation in the best way possible.
9. Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance’s Most Fowl

Now, we are getting to the animated movies that scored a perfect 20/20 from me, the latest Aardman masterpiece as well as the latest from one of the most well-loved animated franchises, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance’s Most Fowl proves that Aardman still got it in 2025. Such a fun stop-motion masterpiece that did not need to try way too hard to entertain its moviegoers.
8. The Bad Guys 2

Yeah, 2025 was a fantastic year for top-tier animated movie sequels, eh? Take everything that was fantastic with the first movie, then add even more stakes, humour and action to the mix and you get one of the most popular animated movies of the year. A movie that went all out in the best way possible.
7. K-Pop Demon Hunters

Speaking of popular, easily one of the most iconic animated movies of 2025, KPop Demon Hunters broke records and demons for breakfast, with iconic characters, fun animation and one of the best soundtracks of any 2025 movie, let alone animated movies. This movie was truly golden.
6. Spermageddon

Into the true masterpieces that came out in 2025, this might be a controversial take, but I think Spermageddon is a masterpiece. I flew to Bangkok on a whim to watch this Norwegian sex-positive musical, and I came out enlightened by what I saw. Spermageddon is hilarious, has fantastic animated movie typical foreign CG animated movie standards and its songs are absolute bangers. Spermageddon is easily my most favourite adult orientated animated movie of the past few years, and while it might not be for everyone, Spermageddon should be on everyone’s watchlist even despite its “inappropriate” subject.
5. Arco

The Annecy Cristal winner from the Annecy Film Festival 2025, Arco is an animated movie that feels very grounded, well-produced and emotionally impactful with its ending. Despite being mainly produced by first-timers, Arco is a labour of love that moviegoers need to see, rainbows and all.
4. Nobody

Nobody is easily the funniest animated movie of 2025, but despite its hilarious undertones, it is a movie that is more than just a hilarious parody and satire, but also a heartfelt animated movie about friendships in spite of the differences in the characters’ personalities. I got to be honest, Nobody is anything but, because it is easily one of my most favourite animated movies to see whenever I need a power boost about four animals on a hilarious journey of self-discovery.
3. Ne Zha 2

The highest grossing animated movie of all time and easily my most favourite Chinese animated movie of all time, Ne Zha 2 took everything that was fantastic about the first movie and turned it up many notches. This movie has everything: comedy, action, heart and above all, some of the greatest fight sequences of any animated movie for the past few years. Ne Zha 2 is such a triumph in Chinese animation and even so, many people doubted this movie’s success.
My advice? See this movie for yourself. Ne Zha 2 is an overwhelming animated movie in the best way possible. And yes, I have to say this: Ne Zha 2 was robbed.
2. Zootopia 2

Perhaps my most anticipated animated movie of 2025, Zootopia 2 is without a question the best animated movie sequel of 2025 so far. What else do I need to say about this crazy talking animal animated movie that shows that it is indeed the final boss of talking animal animated movies. A movie full of action, comedy and iconic characters, both old and new. The animation is easily the best for any Disney animated movie which is well needed, the soundtrack is a banger and you can tell everyone was having fun with this movie.
There is a reason why Zootopia 2 might have a chance to catch up with Ne Zha 2 with its box office run, because it delivered everything that was great about the first movie, and then some. Seriously, you are also missing out on this movie along with Ne Zha 2 if you had yet to see both of these masterpieces.
1. Little Amelie or the Character of Rain

Finally, we have come to my most favourite animated movie of 2025 and, after a lot of thinking of what should be my number 1, this movie is it. There is something so ground-breaking as an animated movie produced by first-timers that took the world by storm, or in this case, a small Belgian girl growing up in Japan. A movie that is the final boss of family-friendly animated movies, Little Amelie is a revolutionary animated movie about self-discovery, curiosity and the wonder of the world around us.
Honestly, this movie is just a league above the rest, with fantastic and well-written characters, a unique and interesting watercolour animation style that feels very different from any other animated movie I had covered this year, a chill and calming soundtrack and above all, an emotional impact with a third act that sets this movie apart from any other animated movie this year. It’s insane that for the directors involved, Little Amelie is their first ever movie. This movie was clearly not the work of amateurs, but the work of veterans who understand what it takes to produce such a mesmerizing animated movie and it is for these reasons that I am happy to announce that Little Amelie or the Character of Rain is my most favourite animated movie of 2025.
Conclusion
Well, 2025 was a rather interesting year of animated movies, isn’t it? I learnt a damn lot from the 74 animated movies I covered and it is because of my various animated movie adventures that I also discovered more animated movies that are worth exploring for
It is now time we set our sights to the present as next time, we are exploring the first animated movies I got to see in 2026. Until next time, see you on the next adventure!
